Kosh-Agach (Кош-Агач)

The drive from the border to Kosh-Agach was very painless. We were driving in search of a place to stay based on some loose information we had received from the Land Rover driving Norwegians we had met a few days earlier. After passing through this rather bleak town in less than two minutes, we had no problem finding a hotel. Although it was probably a different one to that mentioned by the Norwegians. As we had no roubles, we went in search of an ATM. This proved more difficult, but after bothering some shop keepers and other random people we found a room full of ATMs. As it gets cold here in winter, everything is indoors and the Russians are not very good at advertising and signs, so simple things like ATMs can be hard to find. It also helps to know what to look for I’m Cyrillic.

The hotel was very basic. But it did have a kitchen stocked full of cooking gear and a pool table. Caroline whipped up a wonderful meal which was gobbled up. After dinner we went for a late evening stroll along the river, over the bridge and through some back streets. And in our wanderings we meet three Polish guys working on their truck. Some problem with the brakes. They were heading to Mongolia and it was nice to see them so enthusiastic. We agreed to have a drink with them in a couple of month’s time when we pass through Poland.
