Day 8: Knighton to Kington

Friday, October 9th, 2015

Same morning routine: alarm at 6:15am, breakfast at 7am – Bernadine kept me company, very nice. Before I walked out the door she showed me the guestbook entry from Louise and Bill Paxton, of which I took a picture. I left Stowe View B&B around 7:40am and was back on the Path around 7:50am.

After a brisk climb out of Knighton the Path flattened out for quite some time, mostly running alongside or on the Dyke – very nice walking indeed. Next was Hawthorn Hill, not as steep as the previous day, but still steady uphill. Down to Dolley Green followed by some more level walking before the next, rather steep stretch followed by a steady uphill. Granner Wood saw a bit of up up and down before a nice section on the Dyke again. The level-ish trail was nice, specially before the long and steady ascent of Herrock Hill, followed but Rushock Hill. The last two hill the walking was mostly through bracken interspersed with the obligatory sheep of course. The last kilometers of the day’s walk was for the long descent into Kington. It got a bit frustrating as I could never see the town until I was practically in it. First stop was an electrical store to buy a new battery for my watch. Quite important to keep that one running correctly as I use it to keep track of how far I’ve walked.

I arrived at The Oxford Arms, my lodgings for the night, around 3:15pm. The place looked a bit tired outside and in, the room wasn’t the most modern, but it was comfy and spacious enough. I had dinner in the pub’s dining room and the place grew on me. It also helped that the heating came on early evening. Sleeping above a pub again held the promise of a noisy night. Rugby game that night: New Zealand vs Tonga.

And the weather in Wales on this day 8? Absolutely gorgeous!!!! Lovely morning fog and then sunshine all day! Not hot mind you, but cool and sunny.
