South Georgia Island

On our way to the Antarctic peninsula, we stopped for a view days in South Georgia Island. At the time we did not know how wonderful this little sub antarctic island was. And now it is one of our most favourite places in the world.

St Andrews Bay

Fortunate to do two zodiac landings on the beach. The first just before sunrise at 4am and the second at 8am. King Penguins are the main event.

Gold Harbour

We spent the afternoon in Gold Harbour. New here were Gentoo Penguins and Elephant Seals.

Hercules Bay and Grytviken

Macaroni Penguins in the morning and visit to South Georgia’s capital in the afternoon.

Fortuna Bay

In the morning we visited the King Penguin Colony and we saw lots of very sociable chicks and molting adolescents.

Shackleton Walk

In the afternoon we joined other hikers to retrace the last leg of Shackleton’s heroic journey to save his men. Fortuna Bay to Stromness, 6km / 4m.

Prion Island and Elsehul Bay

That morning we were lucky to visit the Albatross Colony on Prion Island; later that afternoon Stephen went zodiac cruising in Elsehul Bay.
