Sea of Okhotsk

The Sea of Okhotsk is located in the Russian Far East surrounded by Siberia, the Kamchatka Peninsula, the Kuril Islands and Japan. Most people haven’t heard of this little sea and even fewer have visited this remote and sparsely inhabited region. The area is bustling with wildlife and was the main purpose of our visit here. We joined an expedition ship and circumnavigated the Sea for three weeks, exploring the lands, the wildlife and the local peoples. Two of our dear friends, Tricia and Hilde, were able to share the expedition and experiences with us.

We visited remote islands (Tyulenly, Iony, Mal’Minsky, Atlasova, Yankicha), far eastern Russian cities (Yuzhno Sakhalinsk, Okhotsk, Petropavlovsk), an abandon submarine base (Simushir) and also spent many hours in inflatable zodiac boats cruising the costal-line in search of wildlife. Our journey totaled 7,000 kms and lasted three weeks. Visit our Travel Blog for more details of this wonderful trip.
