Arrived in Valparaíso
February 4, 2011

It was brought to my attention that it had been a while since I’d updated this blog so let me remedy that now! Been far too busy having a good time 🙂 On the ‘at sea’ days I am usually busy trying to ignore the pitching and rolling of the ship, so not a good […]

Chilean Fjords
January 24, 2011

Monday, January 24th January 22nd was the official end of our trip to South Georgia and Antarctica. What an amazing experience that was! Very hard to describe the scope of what we saw in words. Stephen left The World at noon to catch his flight back home; it was decided that I would stay on […]

Cape Horn
January 20, 2011

Thursday, January 20th Stephen gave a well attended and well received presentation about his 2009 Mt Everest Expedition in the morning. Around noon we arrived at Cape Horn and the expedition team decided that the weather was favorable to do zodiac landings at the Cape. This was simply the cherry on an already very well […]

Getting ready to sail from Ushuaia
January 3, 2011

Well, here we are, on board of The World, probably the most luxurious way possible to sail to Antarctica!!! We leave port in about 3 hours. First stop: South Georgia (UK). Penguins here we come 🙂 On December 31st we were on the road by 10am; Stephen was impressed. Stopped for fuel and to buy […]

Laguna del Carbón: Tick!!!!
December 30, 2010

Yes!!!! We made it to the lowest point in South America!!! We set out early (enough) from El Calafate and started off on Ruta 9, a good gravel road. We really did feel like being away from it all; in the 3.5 hours it took to drive it we saw 2 cars and a truck. […]

Perito Moreno Glacier
December 29, 2010

Wonderful day visiting Perito Moreno glacier. Fantastic! Imagine a 50m high, 5km wide glacier slowly crawling and calving its way into Lago Argentino. We walked around the various observation points in the late morning and took the obligatory boat ride to the glacier front in the afternoon. We shot the equivalent of 6 rolls of […]

Arrived in El Calafate
December 27, 2010

After 2.5 interesting (and hot and humid) days in Buenos Aires, we got up at 4 am this morning to catch our 6:40am flight to Rio Gallegos. Got to the regional airport without hassles, got checked-in (and paid our reasonable excess luggage fee) in record time, had breakfast, boarded our plane, and landed in Rio […]

Enjoying Buenos Aires
December 26, 2010

Had a lovely day yesterday walking about the city. The streets were quiet and hot.  We found the high-end shopping district, fortunately (or unfortunately) they were all closed, being Christmas day. Today we visit the Recoleta Cemetery, San Telmo and La Boca. Cameras are ready for the sights. Signing off in a very warm Buenos […]

Arrived in Argentina
December 24, 2010

After a long but uneventful flight we arrived in Argentina.  Today we are just relaxing and enjoying the warm weather. Maybe it is a little too warm here. Caroline conspired to leave the only key to the locks of our luggage back in San Francisco, which provided a moment of concern for us. Which was […]

Mountains
Aconcagua
December 22, 2004

Left the mountain at 6:00pm last night for the drive back to civilization. The climb was great. Quite bit easier than I thought it would be. Even through I was wasted by the time we got off the summit and to the safety of the high camp. Richard and I were able to do the […]

Mountains
Hot Springs, Sunburn and Argentina
December 8, 2004

Yesterday was spent relaxing and soaking up the sun and warm water of the Papallacta Hot Springs. Needless to say I got sunburnt. The only fortunate thing is that you can`t see the sunburn. Tonight I fly to Argentina to continue the adventure and attempt the summit of Mt Aconcagua. This will be a different […]

Mountains
Success on Chimborazo
December 7, 2004

Richard and I were successful on Chimborazo (Veintemilla) yesterday. It was a massive day making the ascent in a little under 7 hours to gain the 6,267m (20,561ft) summit. The snow condition was excellent allowing us to make good speed up the mountain. Unfortunately the wind was terrible, and we both had a layer of […]

Success on Cotopaxi!
December 3, 2004

Just returned from a summit success on Cotopaxi, Ecuador’s second highest mountain measuring in at just under 6,000mts. The snow condition was terrible, so made the climb very (very) difficult. Currently absolutely exhausted, so heading for an afternoon nap. Chimborazo in two days. Signing out from Quito.
